Dunedin Botanic Garden

Dunedin Botanic Garden

Product Overview

A lush and peaceful oasis in the city, the Dunedin Botanic Garden is spread across over 30 hectares in North Dunedin, home to more than 6,800 plant species and the birdsong of wild bellbirds, wood pigeons and tui. The garden has a wide range of plant collections including a rock garden, herb garden and rose garden. The lower garden is the more formal part of the garden, home to the children’s playground, band rotunda, duck pond and sculptures.

It’s on flat terrain and is fully accessible. Toilets and parking are available. The upper garden is set on a rolling hill in a naturalistic setting. A trip up the hill provides stunning views and seating is dotted along the way. GLOBALLY RECOGNISED Dunedin Botanic Garden is New Zealand’s first botanic garden and holds a six star rating from the NZ Gardens Trust. The garden has been ranked level III by ArbNet, the global network for tree-focused professionals, and the camellia collection is rated as a Garden of Excellence by the International Camellia Society.

Product Description

WINTER GARDEN GLASSHOUSE The elegant glasshouse, built in 1908 will take you through three landscapes from lush jungle to dry desert.

RHODODENDRON DELL Covering 4 hectares, the Rhododendron Dell is big enough for a small adventure. A woodland garden set in New Zealand native forest, it has over 2200 rhododendrons.

GEOGRAPHIC PLANT COLLECTION Travel the world and see species that come from the wild. Plants come from the Mediterranean, North America, the Himalayas, Shanghai, North Asia, South America, Mexico, Southern Africa and Australia.

NEW ZEALAND NATIVE PLANT COLLECTION Native plant species look good in all seasons. About 85 percent grow naturally only in New Zealand so to some, this seems quite a quirky collection.

LOVELOCK BUSH This pocket of native bush will give you a taste of the New Zealand wild, with an easy terrain of wide, wood chipped tracks.

CAMELLIA COLLECTION The camellia collection is a winter hit – camellias start flowering in autumn and don’t finish till early summer. Towering above the collection are European beech trees that display a new type of beauty each season.

SPECIMEN TREES Gracing the lawn with their solidity and beauty, single specimen trees range in age from the 1860s. Each has a label explaining their name and natural range.

AVIARY Both native and exotic birds live here. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon as most birds nap during the middle of the day.
